Gaming regulators approved Encore Boston Harbor sports betting on Thursday. It is the first casino to get approval in Massachusetts. Also, it could allow in-person wagering in 2023.
According to bookie pay per head sources, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission held extensive hearings over three days to consider three sports betting applications from casinos in the state. Unfortunately, only Encore Boston Harbor received a sports betting license.
At least for the time being, Encore Boston Harbor could negotiate what its rivals MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino had not. Several times, the commission unanimously approved Encore Boston Harbor’s request.
It’s the first time the commission has officially greenlit a sports betting operator, and it comes as the industry prepares to go live in late January. Although this is a massive victory for those who advocate for legalized sports betting, Encore Boston Harbor still has ways to go before locals can place bets on their favorite teams. However, it is far from the best sports betting software.

Casino representatives celebrated the decision, and commissioners praised Encore Boston Harbor for what they considered a solid application to become the sole legal provider of sports betting in the Greater Boston region.
The partnership between Encore Boston Harbor and WynnBET, which will provide an odds-setting service for retail wagering, nearly caused the vote to be delayed. They share a parent firm, and next week there will be a hearing on WynnBET’s application for a mobile sports betting license, which it has also submitted. That way, they can open an online sportsbook.
Encore Boston Harbor was contacted by Commissioner Nakisha Skinner, who requested information on WynnBET’s compliance record and the possibility of license revocation or denial.
Krum stated that she could provide further details, but only if the meeting entered an executive session, which the public could not attend or observe.
