James McDonald Suspended: An Update

James McDonald, now regarded as the world’s best jockey, has been barred from riding for the next eight race meets, as announced last week. The 30-year-old Kiwi was given a riding ban by Racing Victoria stewards for “careless riding” after winning race three atop the heavy favorite Roots on Oaks day at Flemington. The ban will begin at 12 a.m. on Saturday, allowing McDonald to end his Melbourne Cup carnival by riding on Stakes day at Flemington.

McDonald rode Verry Elleegant to victory in the Melbourne Cup last year, but he was unable to compete in Tuesday’s main event because his ride was retired prior to the barrier draw. On race day, he failed to win a race, although three days earlier, he rode four winners on the Derby card. Many gambling platforms saw a lot of action on this race, even without him.
